What Custom Labels Really Cost: A Full Price Breakdown

What you're actually paying for

A label price is not one number — it is five stacked costs, and knowing them helps you understand every quote you get.

• Material. The fabric, paper or card stock itself — satin, damask thread, 350gsm art card, PU leather-look sheet.
• Setup. Digitising your artwork, threading a loom, or making a print plate. This is a one-time cost spread across your order.
• Production labour. Weaving, printing, cutting, folding and finishing — the actual factory time.
• Finishing. Lamination, foil stamping, embossing, die-cutting — each is a separate machine pass.
• Freight and duty. DHL/FedEx express plus any import duty on your side, usually the smallest line item on a label order.

Setup is the cost most first-time buyers do not see coming — and it is also the reason unit price drops sharply as quantity rises.

Price by label type

These are baseline prices for a single-colour design at standard finish. Multi-colour, foil, embossing and die-cutting are quoted as add-ons — see the next section.

What changes the price

• Quantity. The single biggest lever. Doubling from 250 to 500 typically drops per-unit price by 25–35%.
• Number of colours. Woven labels price by thread colour count; printed labels are usually flat-rate full-colour with no per-colour surcharge.
• Finish. Foil stamping (+$25/order), embossing (+$20/order) and custom die-cut shapes (+$30/order) are flat add-ons, not per-piece.
• Fold or shape complexity. A straight-cut label is cheapest; scalloped edges, die-cut outlines and multi-fold booklets cost more per setup.
• Rush production. Standard lead time is 3–5 days production. Rushing to 24–48 hours typically adds 15–25%.

Factory-direct vs local print shop

The gap exists because a local print shop is itself a middleman buying from a wholesale printer and marking it up. Going factory-direct removes that layer — the trade-off is a longer delivery window instead of same-week pickup.

How to get the best price

• Order the sample pack first ($29, credited). Confirms the material before you commit to a bulk price.
• Combine label types in one order. Hang tags, woven labels and care labels ship together on one freight cost.
• Pick one strong finish, not three. A single foil accent on matte lamination looks premium and keeps the add-on bill down.
• Order at a price-break quantity. Ask what the next 250 or 500 does to your unit price — it is often a bigger jump than expected.
• Send vector artwork. AI, PDF or EPS files skip a redraw fee that some suppliers quietly add to raster (JPG/PNG) submissions.
