The 10-Point SEO Checklist for Product Listings (With Examples)
Product page SEO isn't magic and it isn't dead — it's a checklist. Most listings that fail to rank aren't missing some advanced trick; they're missing basics like a sensible title or a real description. Run every new listing through these ten points before you hit publish.
1. Title: 30–65 characters, keyword first
Search engines truncate titles around 60 characters, and shoppers scan the first three words. Put your main keyword at the front, your differentiator after.

✓ "Custom Woven Labels for Clothing Brands | MOQ 100"
2. One page, one keyword target
Pick a single primary keyword per product ("custom woven labels"), and let each product page own a different one. Ten pages all chasing "custom labels" compete against each other and all rank worse.
3. Keyword in the first sentence of the description
Not stuffed — used naturally. "Our custom woven labels are made from high-density damask thread..." tells both Google and the shopper they're in the right place.
4. Write 150+ words of real description
Thin pages (a title, a price, two bullet points) rarely rank. Cover: what it is, what it's made of, sizes/options, who it's for, and how ordering works. This is also where long-tail phrases ("iron-on labels for handmade knitwear") appear naturally and pull in surprisingly specific searches.
5. Answer the questions buyers actually ask
Minimum order? Shipping time? File format for artwork? Washing durability? A short FAQ block on the product page ranks for question searches and cuts your pre-sale emails in half.
6. Name your image files before uploading
IMG_4382.jpg tells Google nothing. custom-woven-label-damask-black.jpg is a free ranking signal in image search — which for visual products drives real traffic.
7. Fill in alt text
One plain sentence describing the image: "Black damask woven label sewn into a shirt collar." It helps image SEO and accessibility. Don't stuff keywords into it.
8. Compress images under ~200KB
Page speed is a ranking factor and a conversion factor. A product page with six 4MB photos loses mobile shoppers before it loads. Free tools like Squoosh or TinyPNG cut file size by 80% with no visible difference.
9. Readable URL
✓ /products/custom-woven-labels ❌ /products?id=8347&cat=12. If your platform lets you edit the URL slug, use the keyword, lowercase, hyphens.
10. Link related products to each other
"Customers also ordered: hang tags, care labels" isn't just upsell — internal links help search engines discover and rank your other pages. Every product page should link to 2–4 related ones.
Score yourself honestly
A listing that hits 8+ of these points is ahead of the vast majority of small-store competitors. The hard part isn't knowing the checklist — it's actually running it on all forty of your listings. Do them in batches, worst sellers first: those pages have the most to gain.
